Use my guide on how to add flavour healthily

A healthy diet is one that’s low in fat and low in salt. That needn’t mean your diet will be deprived of flavour as there are plenty of natural, tasty ways of adding flavour.

  • Use olive oil – or other unsaturated oils like rapeseed or sunflower – instead of butter.
  • Use non-stick pans for frying so you can reduce the quantity of fat you cook with.
  • Don’t have salt at the table. A grind or two of pepper will season your food nicely.
  • Fresh herbs add heaps of flavour to your cooking as do spices, citrus zest or chopped chillies instead of extra salt.
  • Make dressings with more vinegar or fruit juices, e.g. lemon instead of oil.
  • Trim visible fat off meat and drain any excess fat off when you’re cooking it.
  • Use tasty mature cheese, e.g. Parmesan or Cheddar rather than mild as you’ll need less of it.
  • Be sparing with store cupboard sauces, e.g. ketchup, soy sauce and brown sauce as they can be high in salt.
